Carroll P. Poland, of University City, MO, a brother-in-law of Mrs. Fred E. Martin of this city, died of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Rt. 66, 8 miles east of Edwardsville, Saturday.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Lupton Funeral Home in St. Louis & burial will be in Mt. Auburn cemetery here at 3 p.m. Tuesday with the Dewey & Son Mortuary in charge.
Mr. Poland had served as president of the old MIssissippi Valley Stock Yards in St. Louis since it opened in 1933 until it closed in September of 1965.
Born in Montgomery Co., Mr. Poland was 77 years old. He married the former Edna D. Davis of Mulberry Grove who survives as does a daughter, Mrs. Donald Shumte of Glendale, MO; a sister Mrs. Roxie Ann Walker of St. Louis & 2 grandchildren.
Illinois State Police said Mr. Poland was traveling south on Rt. 66 when he had attempted to pass another auto. He lost control of his car & it overturned.
The accident occurred about 2:40 p.m. Saturday, & Mr. Poland died at 4:25 p.m. at St. Joseph's Hospital in Highland.
Robert Spengel, deputy coroner in Madison Co., said death apparently was due to severe chest injuries sustained in the accident. Mr. Poland was alone.
