OBITUARY: C. A. Crawshaw Old Resident of District Passes. Early Day Stage Driver From Missoula to Cedar Creek. Charles A. Crawshaw, aged 70 years, resident of Missoula 52 years early day stage driver in the Coeur d'Alene district and identified with business life here for nearly 50 years, died at his home, 534 North Second street, Thursday. He had been in ill health for several months and his death occurred at the North side home where he had resided for 42 years.

Born at Denver on August 27, 1865, Mr. Crawshaw came to Montana when 18 years of age and made his home for a time in the Bitter Root. After a short time he came to Missoula and drove stage between Missoula and Cedar Creek 50 years ago, which was before the railroad built through the Coeur d'Alenes. He finally became a grocery clerk here for the old firm of Murphy-Lockman and later went into business with the firm of Tevis & Crawshaw. Later that business consolidated with Henley & Eigeman. Retiring from business, he was connected with the Thomas Farley company here for many years and retired about four years. Mr. Crawshaw was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge.

In 1891 here he married Georgina Richard (sic). The widow survives. Surviving children are four daughters, Mrs. J. R. Killkelly, Seattle; Mrs. I. L. Hatcher, Missoula; Mrs. J. E. Hall, Somers, and Mrs. Spencer Esmay, Missoula. The surviving son is Leonard Crawshaw, Seattle, and John W. Richards and George V. Richards of Missoula are stepsons. There are 15 grandchildren. Mr. Crawshaw is also survived by two brothers, Byron Crawshaw, Forsyth, and Vincent Crawshaw, Denver. Also by two sisters, Mrs. Cora Donohue, New York, and Mrs. Maude Fullington, Portland.

Funeral services will take place at the Marsh & Powell chapel at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Rev. M. E. Van de Mark will conduct the services and the I.O.O.F. lodge will conduct graveside services in Missoula cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Earnest M. Rose, L. F. Harlow, Fred Lehr, Ira Johnston, John Eigeman and Martin Tubbs. Honorary pallbearers will be James R. Thompson, John Danielson, Dan Currie, Ed Waycaster, Keorge (sic) Dunham and Morris Harvey.

HISTORY: Owned and operated a grocery store in Missoula and delivered groceries by horse and buggy. He was the person to recommend building an underpass to the Northside of town as he had to wait for the trains to pass before continuing on with his deliveries. The underpass became a reality after his death and Elizabeth Georgina Crawshaw dedicated the opening.

Charles was the most kind, loving and generous person you could ever know and everyone loved him. He loved his grandkids and had so much patience with them. He would come home at lunchtime to take a nap and he would have several grandkids scrambling over to him to play. He would bring home eggs and the kids would empty the cartons and "sell" the cartons back to him for a penny a piece; SOURCE: Oral history of Genny Osborne, granddaughter; RESEARCH: Sherry Smith.
