Private, Company A, 7th Tennessee Cavalry, enlisted in Jackson, TN on 8/18/1862 and mustered same day, furnishing his own horse and equipment worth $75. He was one of the 100 or more men who went AWOL from the forts on the Miss/Tenn line in June 1863. He left on 6/20/1863 and was captured by the Confederates. Imprisoned in Richmond, VA, he died of small pox on 3/7/1864. In later years Captain Hays “remembered” that he had sent Riles on scout with Co C. His widow, Eliza J Riles, applied for a pension in 1869. She is on the 1883 pensioners list as receiving $8 per month and is unmarried in the 1890 veteran’s census.
