She was the daughter of Charles Moffatt and Elizabeth Adams Moffatt. On March 28, 1888 as Emma J. Moffett, she married Charles F. Dickens at Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. She was the great-granddaughter of Daniel Moffatt, Revolutionary War Soldier and a member of the DAR.

Emma J. Dickens died on Friday, April 10, 1936 at Columbia Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles F. Dickens. Survivors included her son, Charles M. Dickens [1901-1979] and two sisters: Mrs. Selma A. Tracy [1874-1961] and Mrs. Elizabeth M. Getzendanner. Services were held at the Wallace Memorial Church at New Hampshire Avenue and Randolph Street Northwest. Interment was at Rock Creek Cemetery. Arrangements were by W.W. Chambers Co. Funereal Home at 1400 Chapin Street Northwest.
