She and David Augustus Engle married in 1870 and had 2 daughters: Jennie May Engle 1871; Zulu Zay Engle, May 1882. Both daughters resided most of their lives in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. David Engle abandoned Mary Catherine in 1888 . Mary Catherne filed for and received a divorce decree in 1890. Zulu Zay was very talented gymnast and was sent to West Chester Normal School where she excelled in gymnastics. There she met her husband, Levi Llewellen Hoopes. They eventually moved to Kansas City and her mother Mary Catherine Dentler Engle lived with the Hoopes until her death in 1930.
