A. Elizabeth Craig was the daughter of Bynum Wilkie Craig (1826-1910) and Rebecca A. Hall (1835-1909). She married John Tillman Rector on 4 Aug 1887 in McDowell County, North Carolina; probably in Halltown, a small community northwest of Marion. Tillman was the son of Jacob Levi Rector (1831-1917) and Lucinda Grider (1833-1914). Elizabeth, her husband Tillman, his wife, and their five children (4 sons and an infant daughter) lived in Halltown. In Dec 1898, Elizabeth's brother Tomas Craig (1869-unk) returned from California where he was a wheat farmer. Apparently Tom was exposed to smallpox prior to his return to North Carolina. He contracted the disease in Halltown at the home of his parents, Bynum Wilkie Craig and Rebecca A. Hall. He exposed everyone in the Craig household house including Elizabeth and her family as well as several neighbors. Five people died from the disease in Jan 1899 including Elizabeth, her husband, and their infant daughter. Elizabeth's brother Robert H. Craig (1879-1899) and a neighbor, Tom Cannon, who was providing healthcare for the family, also died. All of the individuals who died were buried in the Halltown Cemetery. Graves of Robert Craig and Tom Cannon are clearly marked. The graves of Elizabeth and Tillman were identified in the book "McDowell County North Carolina Cemeteries, Volume 3" as unmarked graves. The grave for Elizabeth was listed as Sis Rector Craig, w/o Tilman Craig. The grave for Tillman was simply listed as Tilman Rector. The grave of the infant daughter was not identified. Thomas Craig recovered and returned to California. The information concerning the smallpox epidemic was taken from several newspaper articles published during January and February 1899 in a Charlotte Newspaper chronicling the epidemic.
