Son of Joseph Conaway of Virgina and Catherine Nixon of Ohio, who were married on 7 February 1833 in Ross County, Ohio.

John W Conaway is listed as Joseph Conaway's son in 1850 US Census for Buckskin Twp., Ross County, OH.

The family moved to Sugar Creek Twp., Putnam County OH, but he was not listed to be living with them in the 1860 US Census record.

John W and brother Harrison entered service September 2 1861 for a 3 year term, Both were assigned to Company A 57th Regiment OVI, which mustered in at Camp Vance in Findlay OH.

Brother Pvt. Harrison Conaway died from disease 19 May 1862 at Shiloh, TN, and was buried at Shiloh National Military Park.

Pvt. John W Conaway died 8 August 1862 from wounds received from a falling tree while the regiment was on duty at Memphis, TN.

Location of burial currently unknown.
