Newton spent his early years on his father's farm and after his father left the area, he lived in Maries County for several years. He later lived in Gillespie Co., TX after his first wifes death. There he lived under the name of 'Charlie Beaver' and was employed on a cattle ranch in Gillespie County until about 1900. He then relocated to the Territory of Oklahoma, where he acquired land that at one time was part of the Chickasaw Indian Nation. But by 1907 he was located either in Wright Township of Jefferson Co. or possibly in Love County. There he married a second time.

His real name was Newton Edward Crider AKA Charley Beavers
