Drexel enlisted and served three years in the Merchant Marines, training at Hoffman Island, New York, radio school as a cryptographer. He couldn't serve in the infantry because he had lost his trigger finger at age nine to an insect bite although he had perfect marksmanship. Drexel then spent two years in the ETO European Theatre of Operations during Worlw War II. The day after maritime discharge, he signed up for the U.S. Air Force reserves for four years, during which time he married, started a family and graduated college.

Drexel married Dorothy Talbert at the University Methodist Church on the LSU campus in November of 1949. Drexel attained an electrical engineering degree from LSU at Baton Rouge in 1951 at which the greeting was done by Governor Earl K Long.

Drexel and Dorothy raised their family in Beaumont, Texas. He retired from Gulf States Utilities as the manager of the rate department. Drexel and Dorothy then moved to Liberty, Amite County, Mississippi, to care for Dorothy's ailing father. They stayed on there to live their retirement years. In recent years Dorothy and Drexel lived in Brenham, Texas, to be near their daughter.

He was preceded in death by sons, David E. Head and Larry Head; daughter, Linda Head; a grandson, Matthew C. Boeer; sister, Hattibelle Lee; and twin brothers, Terry Head and Jerry Head.
