Attention! All hands on deck!! Cecil "Chief" J. Jump is on final patrol in the Silent Service. Jump, 92, died peacefully Saturday, February 7, 2015. He had his taxes in the mail. Jump is survived by 7 children: Darryl of Salinas, CA; Jill (Peter) Hallenbeck of Efland, NC; Jerome (Jane) of Gaithersburg, MD, Jon of Solana Beach, CA; Joseph of Raleigh, NC; Jeffrey (Connie) of Richland Center, WI; and Jay (Lisa) of South Bend. He was carefully and lovingly cared for by his sister-in-law Jeanette Deranek of South Bend. Jump's grandchildren Patrick, Tara, Kathryn, Angela, Cody, Molly, and Jeremy will miss their grandfather's calls and jokes. "Can you hear me now?" was his greeting to all. Jump was loved by many nieces and nephews. His sister-in-law Violet was always on his mind. Jump was born in Centrahoma, OK on February 14, 1922, and married Gwendolyn Wambaugh in Casper, WY on New Year's Eve 1941. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps before graduating from high school in 1940.
Retired from the Navy in 1969 as Senior Chief Petty Officer, he raised his brood of Navy brats around Evansville, IN. He was a WWII veteran of both the Atlantic and the Pacific campaigns. He was proud of his service on the USS Irex diesel submarine and as a recruiter. He moved to South Bend in 1967, was a longtime member of Corpus Christi parish, and he retired from the IRS in 1984. His Breakfast Club met religiously at the Portage Café.
Preceding him in death were his wife Gwendolyn (1996), his daughter Carole (1952), his son James (1979), his mother Bessie, and his three brothers Carl, Albert, and Stanley. He leaves many loved ones around the country.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 11, 2015 in Corpus Christi Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. A visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a rosary will be prayed at 8 pm.
