He is the son of Arthur Johnson Sr., early family of the Virginia Commonwealth. One of many who looked to the west though Ohio to make their new homes.

His birth is most likely near Clarksburg of early West Virginia which was all part of the Virginia Commonwealth in the Pre-Revoltutionary war years. He was married to Elizabeth Harrison in 1770, who has attachment to a notable Virginian family. He served as a private though Sept. 1777 in the war and finished has an Ensign in his military career. They moved further west though Indiana and settled here in Grandview township, Edgar county, Illinois.
