He joined the United States Army Reserves in 1915. In 1917 his unit was activated, and he was sent to France, where he served as Major of the 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division, AEF and was killed in action in 1918.
He is buried in Plot C, Row 43, Grave 9 in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
His family erected a cenotaph for him in Section K, Lot 32 of Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
