Married Rachel Kelly, 23 March 1807 in Pulaski county, Kentucky, with his name given as Elkins Hand.

Following was submitted by fellow graver, Kathie L. Webb Blair. "I am related to this family (his wife, Rachel, was the sister of my 4x great grandfather, Elias Kelly). Ancestry.com shows that Elkins Mills Hand, b.12 Oct 1783, S. C., died after 1865 in Atchison Co., Kansas. He apparently was living there in 1859 and was there on Jul 6, 1865. It is assumed that he died there."

Researched information: Elkins Mills Hand was a native of South Carolina, having been born on Oct 12th, 1783, the son of James Samuel Hand (1761-1840) and Mary Campbell (1765-1858). He and Rachel Kelly married on 23 March 1807 in Pulaski, Kentucky (the date of their bond, per Kentucky's County Marriage Records). He was a Farmer. He first purchased land (that I can find) on Oct 22nd, 1818 in Alabama (Certificate 5153). By this time, eight (possibly nine) children had been borne from their union. They were:
Drucinda R., b.1808
infant girl b.1808 (died in infancy)
Samuel, b.1809
Temperance, b.1810
Dee, b.1812
Adrimitium, b.1813
Elvina, b.1814
Marilda, b.1816
Mahulda Gowan, b.1816
Tennessee Early Land Registers [Series 2: Entries 1815-1821] show that 100 acres of land was purchased in Warren County, Tennessee on the 15th of June, 1816.
Land Office records from 1829 show that on August 1st, 1829 he purchased 79.80 acres of land in Lauderdale Co., Alabama, paid in cash on April 24, 1820. I also have General Land Office records showing purchase of land in Moniteau, Missouri in 1840, totaling 80 acres [authorized by an act of Congress in 1823].
The 1st Federal Census was conducted in 1850 with a portion of Moniteau, Missouri enumerated on Oct 7, 1850. Elkins Hand is listed as a Farmer, age 60 [incorrect, he was 67 yrs. old], b. South Carolina, with land valued at $200.00. Also in the home, the family's farm, were his wife, Rachel, also born in South Carolina but listed, in error as being only 39 [she was age 65 yrs.]. Also in the home were "D"Hand, age 39, b.Tennessee, a Laborer, and Marilda, age 20, b.Tennessee. His wife, Rachel, died on September 5th, 1851 and was buried at the Byler-Hand Cemetery, in California, Moniteau Co., Missouri. Elkins was never remarried. According to the Kansas State Census of 1859, he relocated in 1855 [for the last time] to the Kansas Territory which had recently been "opened up" for settlement by the whites. He initially lived in Tecumseh, Shawnee Co., Kansas Territory. When the next federal Census was conducted in 1860, E. Mills Hand, now listed as age 76, was still a Farmer with his property now valued at $1,200. Adam, age 50, also listed as a Farmer, Almira, age 45, and Allen, age 19 (b.Missouri), listed as a farm laborer, were also living with him as of July 12th, 1860. The last Census including Elkins Hand was a state census conducted in 1865. The city of Atchison, Atchison Co., Kansas was enumerated July 6th, 1865. Elkins was now living with A.G. Allen [grandson Albert G.], age 28, who operated a boarding house valued at $400. Included in his household were D.R. Allen [Drucinda, his daughter], age 57, "D."H. Hand, age 83, b.NC [in error] and M.G. Allen [granddaughter Martha Jane , who married John Andrew Gage], age 32. There are no records for Elkins Mills Hand after that date, so it can only be assumed that he died after the census was taken in 1865 and is buried in the area, although exact place and date of death and burial are still unknown at this time (not in the Find a Grave system).

Elkin's wife, Rachel (Kelly) Hand, is the daughter of my five times paternal great grandfather and grandmother, Thomas Kelly (1742-1814) and Margaret Boyles (1747-1814).
