Death of Eli Hougham – Eli Hougham, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Needham township, died Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 after an illness of but one day. He had been in town Saturday and again Monday to look after some business matters. He was taken sick Monday afternoon while in Franklin with a severe attack of dysentery and grew rapidly worse. His age and enfeebled condition could not withstand the attack.
Deceased was the son of Aaron Hougham and was born in Fayette county this state, June 22, 1823. He came with his parents to Johnson county in 1831, settling in what is now Needham township. Here he had continued to reside. He was married in 1840 to Emma Parkhurst, to which union two children were born, one of whom, Mrs. J. R. Wright of Indianapolis, survives. His first wife died in 1855. In 1864 he was married to Miss Minerva Johnson in Jennings county, who still survives.
Wilson Hougham, brother of the deceased is now the only surviving member of the original Hougham family that settled in Johnson county.
Deceased had prospered in life and was held in the highest respect. He had never held office of any kind and had never asked for any. He had never been a member of any secret order. While he had never united with any church his sympathies were with the Baptist church. Funeral services were held yesterday morning at 10 o’clock conducted by Prof. C. H. Hall. Interment at Greenlawn.
------
The late Eli Hougham left an estate valued at from $25,000 to $30,000, but no will.
