Wife of writer Manly Wade Wellman, she too was a writer. She wrote primarily horror stories, publishing her 1st story in 1939, sold to Weird Tales magazine. Frances survived Manly by over 14 years and upon death was cremated, her ashes spread on the lawn of their home, "Dogwood Acres," in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Frances sometimes wrote under the name Frances Garfield. Per Dr. Ron Roach in his bio of Manly, Frances was "a music student named Frances Obrist, who would be his (Manly's} lifelong partner and companion."
