D.A. James died Wednesday Aug. 25th, at his home, on Salt Creek. The cause of his death is not directly known. He was as well as usual on the Saturday evening before, but on Sunday morning his children found him at the edge of Mr. Fugates corn field in an unconscious condition. His children carried him to the house, and he lingered until Monday, when he died. He was buried Tuesday, and many sympathizing friends followed his remains to the grave. Published in the Minneapolis Messenger, September 5, 1884, page 5 column 3.

Daniel A. James was born about 1820-1823 in New Jersey to Lewis Smith and Lucretia (Applegate) James. He married Mary O'Donald on 01 Apr 1847 in Clinton County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Holloway) O'Donald. They had 14 known children; Lewis Smith, Samuel Irwin, Sarah L., John Wesley, Narcisa Ellen, Charles A., Emma Ann, Nancy Miranda, Marion Francis, George, Elmer Asa (also known as Elbridge James), Jesse Randolph, William Walter, and Laura B. Daniel was a carpenter and a farmer.

Probate record indicates that Daniel James is buried in Highland Cemetery. He may not have a marker as he is not found on the cemetery directory.
