Byron Everett Coats Sr., was born in the White Rock Community in Texas County, Missouri September 29, 1892 and departed this life March 23, 1976 at age 83 years, five months and 23 days.
He was the son of the late Dr. Jasper and Susie (Florida) Coats. After graduating from Cabool School in 1911 he pursued a career in teaching and to further his education attended school at Houston, Springfield Normal College, Cape Girardeau and U.C.L.A. Later he received his Master's Degree in Education. For over 20 years he taught various rural schools, as well as in Summersville, Mansfield and Winona, retiring from this profession in 1934. Later he successfully owned and operated a dairy farm near Cabool until retiring in 1965.
A resident of the Cabool area since 1910, he was a long-time member of the Barnes Masonic Lodge 116 at Cabool, having joined this fraternal group in 1920 and in 1971 received his 50 year pin from the lodge, having been active in its work throughout the area for many years.
He was specifically interested in education and always mentioned this in his conversations.
Besides his parents, two sisters, Dona Stiles and Ruth Fredrick and an infant brother, Merritt, have preceded him in death.
Byron was a very friendly and helpful person who will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. He recently had professed his faith in the Lord and was prepared for his final journey.
Surviving are his wife, Grace T. Coats, Cabool; two sons, Billy B. Coats, Memphis, Tennessee, and Byron E. Coats, Jr., Cabool; a brother Herbert Coats, Houston, Missouri; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren; and also, many other relatives and friends.
