Alfred M. Aimola, a machinist at the Boston Naval Shipyard for 20 years, died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease) yesterday in the New England Medical Center Hospital after a short illness. He was 58.

Born in Quincy, he was educated in Quincy public schools and graduatedfrom Quincy Trade School in 1941.

A US Army veteran of World War II, he was inducted in 1943, served as a corporal in Europe and won a Purple Heart for wounds he received in the landing at Anzio, Italy. He also received a Bronze Star and a Distinguished Unit Badge. He was discharged in November 1945.

In 1945, Mr. Aimola began his careerat the Boston Naval Shipyard. After retiring in 1965, he worked 16 years for Mathewson Corp. in Quincy.

Mr. Aimola was a former scoutmaster at St. Mary's Church in West Quincy, a past president of the St. Mary's Holy Name Society and a member of the Cyril P. Morrisette Post, American Legion.

He also had been a commissioner of the Quincy Youth Football League.

He leaves his wife, Agnes L. (Plaisted) Aimola of Quincy; a daughter, Gail M. Mattulina of Halifax; two sons, Alfred B. Aimola of Natick and David D. Aimola of Quincy; three brothers, Anthony of Quincy, Armando of California and Adolph Aimola of Braintree; three sisters, Rachael Romig of Quincy, Adeline Sacchetti of Quincy and Frances Barr of Duxbury, and two grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be said Thursday in St. Mary's Church, West Quincy at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, West Quincy.
