Betty is survived by her daughter Teresa Phillips and her husband Billy Phillips; her daughter Karen Smith and her husband Mark Smith; as well as three grandchildren, Evan, Caitlyn, and Collin Smith; two sisters, Bonnie Brewer and Brenda Hawkins; and two brothers, Bruce Millwood and Benny Millwood.
As a beloved member of Chastain Chapel General Baptist Church of Tumbling Shoals for almost 50 years, Betty faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher, assisted with Vacation Bible School, and worked as church treasurer. She was willing to do whatever needed to be done and always with a spirit of humility and kindness.
Betty also owned a successful business, Curtains and Covers, for 39 years. The shop sat on the corner of Third and Main in Heber Springs. Here, Betty helped many customers make their house into a ‘home-sweet-home’. Her tailor-made drapes, bedcovers, and pillows were crafted with love and excellence. Customers often returned over and over for Betty’s quality services, even after moving far away. She always sought to make her clients happy. Many people stopped in her shop to just visit or to receive encouragement, for Betty was a considerate and trustworthy friend.
As a grandmother, Betty created memory after precious memory for her grandchildren. Evan, Caitlyn, and Collin will never forget Grandma’s chocolate pies, gingerbread men, and delicious fried potatoes. They will always hold dear the walks in the woods, catching fireflies in the early summer, digging for potatoes in the garden, and the wonderful bedtime stories. There was much laughter, fun, and delight in Betty’s home. She was a treasure and a support to her children and grandchildren.
This gentle, hardworking, and loving woman will remain a most cherished figure in her church, her community, and her family. While we mourn the loss of Betty, let us not forget that she had a hope. Betty now dwells in heaven with her precious Savior in a land where there is no sickness nor death, no tears and no sorrow. Betty’s favorite Bible verse was 2 Timothy 1:7—“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
Visitation will be at Olmstead Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, February 6, 2015 from 6 to 8 PM. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 1 PM at Chastain Chapel General Baptist Church, 299 Old Hwy. 25, Tumbling Shoals with Pastor Eric Decker officiating. Interment will be at Martin Cemetery in Rose Bud.
