He was a son of the late Dugan Bumgarner and Emma Deal Bumgarner. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Lou and Betty Bumgarner; and four brothers, Jerry, A.B., Ernest and Hansel Bumgarner.

Mr Bumgarner was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and retired from the Merchant Marines after 36 years of service.

He was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed hunting and gardening.

He was a member of the NRA for many years and was also a member of the Kannapolis Moose Lodge.

A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, February 2, 2015, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum in Kannapolis.
