Daniel Lee Brost, 57, parted from this life Jan. 29, 2015.

He was born to Margie (Tschacher) and Fred Brost, of Hemingford, on March 25, 1957. Dan was the fourth of five boys who grew up on a ranch north of Hemingford.

Dan graduated from Hemingford High School in 1975 and Chadron State College in 1978. While at CSC, he met Diana Staal, and they were married on Aug. 5, 1978. Also in 1978, Dan began teaching science in Mullen, where he continued to teach and coach for 34 years. His subject area was science, but he taught so much more than that. He was influential in so many people’s lives and many of them have shared other things he taught, including writing thank you notes, generosity, appreciation for nature, the appropriate times to be serious or to have fun and the true meaning of sportsmanship. Most recently, he worked at McPherson County School in Tryon as the activities director.

Some of his biggest joys were attending his children’s activities, playing with his grandchildren, supporting his students through their activities, coaching wrestling and football, taking scenery and family photographs and attending auctions in search of treasures. Some of his biggest achievements were being inducted into NSWCA Hall of Fame, receiving the Guy Mytty Award for outstanding wrestling achievement and sending numerous wrestlers to the state tournament.

Dan was preceded in death by his father, Fred Brost; and brother, Casey.

He is survived by his wife, Diana; children, Lori (Adrian) Jensen, Kaitlyn, Jason, Tyler and Carter, of Chadron, Nick (Ashley) Brost and Quinn, of Indianola, and Kelli (Trent) Walz, Maci, Ava and Ella, of Callaway; mother, Margie; brothers, Mike (Connie), Tim (Renita) and Pat (Trice); and many cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Lariat Auditorium in Mullen. Burial will be at Cedarview Cemetery. Mullen Funeral Home is charge of the arrangements.
