Clarence Gehrt, age 91, passed away on April 7, 2012, at the Pomeroy Care Center.

Clarence Edward Gehrt was born on March 24, 1921, in Williams Township, Calhoun County, Iowa. He was the son of Edward and Anna (Schrader) Gehrt. He attended rural school in Williams Twp. and St. Paul’s Parochial school in Knoke. He graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1940. From 1942 to 1945, Clarence served in World War II as a ground crew mechanic in the 8th Air Force in England. In 1946, Clarence married Nellie Barker, she passed away in 1966. Clarence operated the DX station and garage in Knoke for twelve years. In 1958, he moved to Pomeroy and worked for the Pomeroy School as a bus mechanic and driver, outdoor maintenance and grounds keeper for twenty-five years, retiring in 1983. In 1969, he married Bess Gertz. Bess passed away on April 3, 2010, and Clarence entered the Pomeroy Care Center in November of 2010.

Clarence was a member of the First United Church of Christ at Pomeroy. The American Legion for sixty-six years. He served as post commander of the Pomeroy Legion Post # 86 and was currently a member of the Manson Post # 204. In his spare time, Clarence enjoyed woodworking, gardening, tinkering and spending winters in Texas.

Survivors include his daughters: Karen (Richard) Schwardt of Pomeroy and LaDonna Norris of Mason City; son: Roger (Kathy) Gehrt of Pomeroy; step-daughter: Janet (Dick) Layman of Pleasant Hill; six grandsons; one step-granddaughter and one great-grandson.

Clarence was preceded in death by his wife Nellie, his wife Bess, infant son, Richard, sister Elizabeth Lake and his brother, Richard.
