Son of Moses Spear (1720 – 1782) and Submit Hastings Spear (1727 – 1782). Joshua first married Mrs. Asenath Winchell Shattuck. Asenath's first husband, Thomas Shattuck, ran off, leaving her with 4 children. She obtained a decree of divorce from him. She married Thomas when she was only 15 years of age. In April 1783, she was censured by her church receiving a letter of admonition for conversing with a young man before obtaining a bill of divorcement from her first husband. This young man is believed to be Joshua Spear who was 19 years old. She was 24. They married shortly afterwards.
Their son Elihu (named after Joshua's deceased brother who took his place in the Revolutionary War) was born 8 Nov 1783, in Feeding Hills, Hampden County MA, 7 months after the censure. He died 11 Nov 1837 in Springfield, Bradford County, PA and is buried in the Spear/Westbrook Cemetery. He married Nancy Chappell, Oct 1805 at Danbury, CT.
Asenath, his next child with Asenath Winchell was born in 1786 in Feeding Hills, married Carlos Harmon 12 Oct 1806 at Suffield, CT and died 11 Nov 1837 at Manchester, Ontario County NY.
King Spear his 3rd child with Asenath was born 24 Jul 1790 at Feeding Hills, married 1812, Grenville, Ontario, Canada, Elizabeth Haley and died 11 Feb 1870 in DePere, Brown County WI.
Joshua then married Miriam (Miller) Leonard 5 May 1796 at Feeding Hills. They had 1) Meriam born July 1797, d. 5 Oct 1800, Feeding Hills, MA; 2) Miriam b. 17 Aug 1801, d. 2 Jun 1866, Mainesburg, Tioga County PA. Married Dexter Parkhurst 9 July 1823, Springfield, Bradford County PA 3) Harriet b. 13 Feb 1804, N. Adams, MA d. 29 Dec 1871 Granville, Bradford County PA, buried in Spear Cemetery, PA; 4) Juliet b. 1807 Springfield,Bradford County PA; 5) Hiram b. 15 Feb 1810, Springfield, Bradford County PA, Married Lucy Ripley and died 13 Mar 1872 at Springfield, Bradford County PA buried in Spear Cemetery. 6) Sophia b. 12 Sep 1812, Springfield, Bradford County PA, married 4 Jul 1831, Springfield, Adin Calkins and died 18 Apr 1887, Springfield.
