Mary Myrtle Beard was born August 12, 1877 at Weaver in Leavenworth County, Kansas. She was the seventh of ten children born to Samuel & Jane Ann (Hull) Beard. Most of her childhood was spent in North Lawrence.
As a young woman, Myrtle worked as a seamstress in the Wilder Brothers shirt factory in Lawrence. She was the last of the children to remain living with her parents. When she was 40 years old, she married George Washington Strahan, a widower with three young children Myrtle helped to raise.
George and Myrtle lived on a farm near Sigel in Kanwaka Township, a few miles west of Lawrence.
