Joseph A. Ritchie, 86, longtime Ucon resident and former member of the Ucon School Board, died of natural causes at an Idaho Falls hospital Sunday night.
Mr. Ritchie managed a mercantile store in Ucon for 21 years. He farmed and worked for the city of Ucon in his later years.
For 23 years he was a member of the school board and helped organize for a better school system and building in the community. He helped build the canals in the area and clear the land.
Mr. Ritchie was born Oct. 22, 1988, at Marriott, Utah, the son of Joseph and Mary Christina Madsen Ritchie. The family moved to Ucon in 1889. At age 12, Mr. Ritchie herded sheep for Ritchie Brothers Sheep Co. to support his mother and family after his fathers' death.
He was married to Pearl May Hobley, June 29, 110, in Idaho Falls. The marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple June 6, 1912. Mrs. Ritchie died July 23, 1963. Mr. Ritchie served a mission in the Central States for the LDS Church. He was a missionary companion to the present LDS Church President, Spencer W. Kimball. He served in many positions in the MIA and Sunday School and also served in the Ucon LDS Ward bishopric for 13 years.
Survivors include one son, Joseph H. Ritchie of Wenatchee, Wash.; two daughters, Mrs. Jean (Lois) Tracy of Ucon and Mrs. Milton (Leah) Brinton of Pleasant Hills, Calif.; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Ida Woolf of Idaho Falls. He was preceded in death by a daughter, May Cook in 1971.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Ucon LDS Ward Chapel with Bishop Ray H. Lott officiating. Family will receive friends Thursday 7-9:30 p.m. at the Wood Funeral Home and Friday at the church hone hour before services. Interment will be in the Ucon Cemetery.
