She was born Bennie Jean Luckey on September 27, 1933 to Benjamin and Abigail Luckey of Troup, Texas.
She was a graduate of Troup High School in 1950. Then she attended Tyler Junior College and Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches majoring in music and education. She completed her masters in Library Sciences at East Texas State University (now Texas A&M at Commerce). She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, a lifetime member of PTA, and also a member of Texas Library Association and Teachers Retirement Association. She also was a charter member of Green Acres Baptist in Tyler and a charter member of The Woods Baptist Church in Tyler.
Bennie Jean started her teaching career in 1954 at Pine Tree. In 1955 she taught at Leverette's Chapel for two years. Then she moved to the Tyler Independent School System and taught on the campuses of Gary, Ramey, Bell, Rice, Orr and finishing at Andy Woods and retiring in 1996.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years Dr. Ed McMillan.
She is survived by her two sons, John Benjamin McMillan and Edgar Scott McMillan; and one granddaughter.
