Dan Byers Dies, Dime Haircuts Known Over U.S.

Funeral services for Dan Byers, Woodbury barber who attracted national fame for his 10-cent haircuts, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Burial was in the Dry Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Byers died unexpectedly at 6 a.m. Saturday morning at his home. He had lived with his daughter, Blanche, since the death of his wife several years ago.

He had retired from his life-long trade, but on the occasion of his 89th birthday last March 12, friends said he still cut an occasional head now and then.

He attracted the attention of the nationwide press, including Life magazine, when it was discovered that he was still charging 10 cents at a time when his colleagues were getting from 75c to $1 a head.

"I've always charged ten cents and that is enough," he said.

In addition to his tonsorial activities, Mr. Byers maintained an ardent life-long interest in politics. He served as tax collector in Woodbury for a number of years, and as Republican committeeman for Woodbury township for over 50 years.

He was born March 12, 1868, at Woodbury R.D., a son of David R. and Anna (Newcomer) Byers. His wife, the former Laura Griffith, whom he married Oct. 16, 1890, preceded him in death. Surviving are four children, Ralph of Philadelphia, Mrs. Charles F. Mentzer of Altoona, Mrs. William Swartz of Tampa, Fla., and Blanche, at home; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Byers was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Woodbury.
