Leona Gertrude Brown, our beloved Nanny, passed away peacefully in her sleep the morning of Wednesday, January 21, 2015. She was 102 years young. Born in Hillje, Texas, Leona lived most of her long and blessed life in El Campo, Texas.

She and her sister, Pauline Dale, owned The Donut Shop on South Washington for many years. A true patriot, Leona was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary since 1969 and the American Legion Auxiliary since 1974.

Family and friends will always remember Leona’s joy for life and her ability to make everyone feel special. Her love of the outdoors was showcased in her abundant flower and vegetable gardens. Always a smile on her face, her outgoing personality shown at church, dances, bingos and nursing home visits.

She will also be remembered for her canned pickles and sauerkraut, her homemade kolaches and her latest hobby of birdwatching. Leona was very proud of her family and Czech heritage.

She was born to the late Joseph and Josephine Blinka on May 28, 1912. She is proceeded in death by her parents, her first husband, Julius Buzek, and her second husband, Nolan Brown as well as her siblings Pauline Dale, Agnes Rabalais, Cecelia Dybala, Lucille Palm, Emil Blinka, Frank Blinka and Ben Blinka and son-in-law William J. Kacal.

She is survived by her daughter Dorothy Kacal, granddaughter Suzanne Kacal Bellis as well as great-granddaughters Hilarie and Avery Bellis. Leona is also survived by her neices and nephews Pam Pucker, Ron Palm and Alton Dybala and great-nieces and great-nephews Joleen Evans, Carl Savage, Clinton Dybala, Sherry Kresta, David Palm, Kathleen Miller, Stephen Palm, Matthew Pucker, Jason Pucker and Stacey Hartung as well as Joleen’s husband Chris and children Allie and Ryan. Charlene Miles, her loving caretaker and friend, will always be part of our family.

Leona will be remembered as a loving, respected mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, as well as a cherished friend, role model and inspiration. Her joy for life and devotion to her faith will live on in the memory of family and friends. Her positive energy that would light any room will be greatly missed.

Viewing will be held at Triska Funeral Home 612 Merchant St. in El Campo. Services are at St. Philip’s Catholic Church, 304 W. Church St. in El Campo with burial following at Holy Cross Memorial Park in El Campo.

Pallbears are Carl Savage, Jason Kacal, Joe Kacal, Ronnie Kacal, Ed Gurecky and Terry Bartlett.
