Charles Allen was born on August 25, 1852 in Platt City, Missouri. He was married to May Hamilton. He was a night watchman at a warehouse in St. Louis. On May 27, 1896, when a tornado struck the elevator where he worked, he rushed out of the building, calling to the others to flee for their lives. Then the roof fell and Allen was heard to shriek. His hat was found a few feet from the ruins. His pocket watch, which stopped ticking upon his death, was passed down to his descendants. He left behind his wife May, daughter May, son Harry Douglas, and unborn son, Theodore Edward Allen, Sr. His father is thought to have been from England.
