Born in Champion, Trumbull county to German farmers.
Became a teacher, school administrator. First married a Julia Ann Stevens, of Warren Falls, OH and they had two girls. Sadly Julia died young, leaving AJ devastated. AJ knew President Garfield and was widely known. His second wife was also a teacher - Ella Waldo from Prattsburg, NY, and they became married on 2 Aug 1869 Trumbull county, OH. They moved to Princeton, Indiana, and had two boys. In retirement they all moved to Washington and become the first librarian of Seattle Library.
He had a stroke in 1896-7 and was impaired for several years before he died of a stroke at home, leaving wife Ella widowed. He left an autobiography that included his childhood memories all the way through his move to Washington and them his daughter wrote in the final details that completed the small work.
