Lewis was born in Cistern, Texas on February 26, 1938, the son of George and Ora (Needham) Bertling. He married Ruby Krause on April 4, 1964.
Lewis was a heavy equipment operator and retired after 27 years of service; and after his retirement, he worked for Fritsch Cattle Company for 8 years. He was a very hard working man who loved the outdoors, fishing and competing in the barbeque cook-offs.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby, of 50 years; daughter, Brenda Schihab and husband, William; four sons: Neal Bertling, Kenneth Bertling, Gary Bertling and Ronnie Bertling all of Fayetteville, Texas; brother, Jack Bertling of Moulton, Texas; six grandchildren: Derek and Brittany Schihab; Abby, Julie, Carin Bertling and Earl Ives; sister-in-law, Dorothy Bertling of New Ulm, Texas; and brother-in-law, Delton Wendt of Bellville, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Margie Wendt, Jane Klump and Joyce Bertling; two brothers: Charles and Melvin Bertling.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Koenig & Strickland Knesek Chapel, 207 Live Oak, Fayetteville, Texas. Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Funeral Services will be held at Koenig & Strickland Knesek Chapel at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2015. Burial will follow at New Ulm Cemetery
