Born on February 19, 1926 to parents Tim and Maudie Pickens, Dewey grew up to serve his country as a Marine during World War II. An avid hunter, Dewey shared his love of hunting and the outdoors with family and friends alike. For several years, he and a group of men would take children from Camp Gene Ashby in Mason, Texas to their deer lease to teach them how to hunt and would donate the meat from the weekend’s hunt to the children’s home. After retiring from the City of Austin Electric Department, Dewey joined a travel club and traveled the United States extensively and with great enjoyment. Dewey was also an advocate of blood donation and was part of the “10 Gallon Club” of the Blood & Tissue Center of Central Texas, an accomplishment of which he was very proud. He loved to BBQ and made the best pot of beans around; he would even make a pot of “sissy” beans for those that couldn’t handle the real stuff. He also enjoyed watching sports … any kind, any time …. Most especially football and the Dallas Cowboys. Dewey was always up for a game of dominoes and was a formidable opponent; if you were playing against him, you were pretty sure you were going to lose, but he made sure that you had a good time doing it. The consummate gentleman and ever polite, Dewey Pickens was a great man, father, husband, uncle, grandfather, and friend that will be missed by many.
