Edward Dunne Barry
July 12, 1934 - November 7, 2009

Edward Dunne Barry died on Saturday, November 7, 2009.

Ed, or "Ebby" to his family and friends, was born on July 12, 1934, at Abbott Hospital in Minneapolis.

He lived on Knox Avenue until 1938 when the Barry family moved to Robinsons Bay on Lake Minnetonka.

He was a longtime resident of Deephaven.

He is the son of the late Walter R. Barry and the late Geraldine Dunne Barry.

His grandfather, Edward F. Dunne, was mayor of Chicago in the early 1900s and then governor of Illinois.

Ebby is survived by his former wife, Anne Mitchell Barry, and their two sons, Leonard (Jennifer) of Madison, WI and David of Hopkins, MN.

He is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth Ann (Peter) Houghton of Wayne, PA, and his brothers, Walter (Jane) of Wayzata, MN and Thomas of Warren, CT.

Edward attended Blake School in Hopkins and graduated from Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, OH.

He attended Williams College and graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1957.

At about this time, he became afflicted with an illness causing depressions from time to time. It was to stay with him for the rest of his life.

Throughout his teenage years and twenties, Ed was known to family and friends as an outgoing, fun, athletic boy who also was #1 academically wherever he studied.

He had a unique sense of what really mattered - loyal and responsive to his family and old friends, open and happy making new ones.

Certainly, the highlight of his life was his marriage to Anne Mitchell of Wayzata.

He cherished his two sons, who inherited the warmth and humor of their parents.

Eb worked at the original Bookcase, J.D. Holzerman's, and the U.S. Postal Service - all places where his encyclopedic memory and unique ability to connect with all kinds of people mattered.

In fact, he had remarkable qualities, among which were fairness, inclusiveness, a deep love and capacity for literature, history, and theology - which he shared with all.

His illness dimmed his natural cheerfulness, but his character prevailed. Ebby's life, with so much promise at the beginning, was often difficult.

Throughout, his wife and sons were steadfast, loyal, and loving.

His funeral Mass will be on Thursday, November 12 at 10 AM at the Church of St. Therese, 18323 Minnetonka Blvd, in Deephaven.

His family will greet visitors at the church beginning at 9 a.m.

"So, goodbye dear Eb. You are on your way to a better place."

The family thanks the staff of North Ridge Care Center for their compassionate and professional care.

Memorials preferred to the Father Francis Shea Fund at the Church of St. Therese, 18323 Minnetonka Blvd, Wayzata, MN, 55391, or to North Ridge Care Center, 5430 Boone Ave. N, New Hope, MN, 55428.

Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Shorewood following the Mass.
