Wade Shuyler, 84, passed away peacefully April 18 in Portland.

He was born in Kibby, Okla., to Earnest Alvin and Ethel Rose (Wade) Shuyler. He was the youngest of seven children. He attended school in Kibby, played varsity basketball starting in the eighth grade and graduated in 1939.

He married Thelma Parsons in 1939. He enlisted in the Army in 1942. During World War II, he served as a radio mechanic in the Army Air Corps' 81st Fighter Squadron, 50th Fighter Group while stationed in England, France and Germany. He was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal in September 1945.

In 1948, Wade and his family moved to Washington. He worked as an electrician throughout his life. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He guided hunts with hounds for coon, bear and bobcat. He enjoyed taking his kids on hunting and fishing trips.

In 1968, he started his racehorse training career. His passion for horse racing took him up and down the West Coast from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, to Bay Meadows in California. He owned and trained many winners including Rusty Leo Bar, Aliving Doll and Father's Joak.

In 1996, he moved to Lebanon, where he continued to train horses and win races. He moved to the Veterans Home in The Dalles in August 2005.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Alma Shirm and Valma Gibson; his brothers, Myron, Fred, Clinton and Merrill; and daughter Marilyn Malito.

Survivors include his companion, Frances Hartford; his children, Clara Anne and son-in-law Gary Askew of New Plymouth, Idaho, Merle and daughter-in-law Beverly of Selah, Wash., Steven and daughter-in-law Jenny of Clackamas, and Ernest of Scio; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A private family service and inurnment is planned for a later date.
