First cousin of Mary Montague Henshaw Toulmin, wife of U.S. Dist. Judge Harry T. Toulmin, of Toulminville and Mobile, Alabama.
Ada Allen Isbell married on April 24, 1883 at her mother's home, Clifton Plantation, Clarke County, Virginia, to Armistead Selden Lippitt, who grew up as a neighbor and playmate of the Lee children of Arlington Plantation. An oft-repeated story is of an incident when Armistead Lippit was mistaken for Robert E. Lee Jr. by his own father, General Robert E. Lee.
Ada and her husband are reported to have lived at Wortley Plantation, Jefferson County, West Virginia. (Citation: The Millar-DuBois Family, Its History and Genealogy, by Eva Miller Nourse, 1928). Her mother died at Wortley also.
Clifton Plantation straddles the Clarke County, Virginia/Jefferson County, W.V. county and state lines but the house Clifton is on the Virginia side. Wortley was on the W.V. side.
