Lawrence A. Dero, 74, of Lake Miltona, passed away on Saturday, March 30, 1996 at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria. A Memorial Mass was held Wednesday, April 3, 1996, 11 a.m. at the St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Belle River with Father Jeff Ethen officiating. Interment was in the St. Nicholas Church Cemetery with Military honors by VFW Post 7826.
Lawrence was born on October 20, 1921 in Minneota, Minnesota. He was the son of Celina (DeBaere) and Wilfred "Fritz" Dero. He graduated from Minneota High School. During WWII Lawrence served in the U.S. Army in Newfoundland with the Medical Corps at a Military Hospital. On August 17, 1942 he was married to Marie Szarzynski at the St. Edward's Catholic Church in Minneota. They made their home in Minneota, raising 12 children. Lawrence worked at Robertus Furniture in Marshall. He was the owner of Dero Chevrolet in Minneota for 27 years. He also began the Joe Lad Chevrolet dealership in Marshall which he operated from 1956-1961. Marie and Lawrence purchased a home on Lake Miltona in 1964 and moved there permanently in 1977. Lawrence worked as a salesman for Steinbring Chevrolet in Alexandria until his retirement in 1994 at the age of 72. Twice he was chosen by the Minneapolis Chevrolet zone to serve on the dealer council in the mutual planning program. Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Clarence and Donny; and a sister Jeanette VanRobay. Lawrence is survived by his wife, Marie Dero of Miltona; six sons: Larry Dero of Miltona; Pat and wife Paulette Dero of Eden Prairie; Tom and wife Wanda Dero of Berlin, MD; John and wife Lois Dero of Minneota; Charlie Dero of Miltona; Paul and wife Eldora Dero of Garfield; six daughters: Vicki and husband Tom Bot of Ghent; Mary Joan and husband John Hennen of Minneota; Jeanette and husband Al Brewers of Tallahassee, FL; Ann Dero of Alexandria; Laura and husband Wayne Sterling of Fergus Falls; Julie and husband Daryl Gillund of Granite Falls; 25 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
