Headstone and footstone photos in this memorial are those of Thomas Coskery's SON, Thomas William Coskery, Sr (1820-1907), not Thomas.

-----

Born around 1776 in County Down, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. It is not known who his father was, but Thomas Coskery was probably closely related to James Coskrey (1776-ca.1841), John E. Coskrey (1783-1848), and John Coskery (1891-1945).

Variants of the surname such as Croskery, Croskerry, Crossgrove, Cosgrove, Cosgrave, and Cosgriff, appear both in Northern Ireland and here in the U.S. & Canada. It is claimed by some that the original Irish spelling was O'Coscraigh.

Towns in County Down some relatives lived in included Seaforde, Ballynahinch, Loughinisland, and other small towns northwest of Downpatrick.

Thomas Coskery was the father of John Coskery (1806-1884) and Thomas William Coskery, Sr. (1820-1907). Both brothers were born in Northern Ireland and died in Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia.

Thomas William Sr. became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1837 and is buried in the Summerville Cemetery in Augusta, GA. In the 1900 U.S. census he listed his occupation as "Capitalist." Thomas William Sr. was a wholesale grocer, in business for a time with his brother John. He married Mary Martin (1825-1896), also buried in Summerville Cemetery. She was the daughter of Angus and Mary Martin of Augusta. Thomas William Sr. and Mary had two sons: Thomas William Coskery, Jr. (1841-1908) and Hugh Coskery.

Thomas William Sr's brother John Coskery (7 Mar 1806-31 May 1884) was also a wholesale grocer and like Thomas William Sr. was buried in the Summerville Cemetery.

In addition to Thomas William Sr. and John, Thomas Coskery was also the father of Samuel Coskery (1822-1879), who moved to Des Moines, Iowa.
