SAVANNAH - James Edward Carr (Jim), 101 years old, of Savannah, Georgia died of pneumonia on December 23, 2014. Jim was born on November 13, 1913 in Farmington, Iowa, the second eldest of 7 siblings.

His father, James E. Carr was the general postmaster in Farmington while his grandfather, also James E. Carr fought with the Iowa Infantry during the Civil War and was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh. Jim recently visited Farmington for his 80th high school reunion! He was the only one there from his class. Jim attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School where he was editor of the Law Review. His studies were interrupted the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor; Jim along with all his fellow students volunteered to serve. Jim was assigned to the battleship USS Nevada as signals officer overseeing the interception and decoding of German communications. He was a great storyteller and regaled friends and family with vivid accounts of the action he saw in the Pacific, Atlantic and in the Mediterranean, but most particularly, his ship's participation at D-Day and the Normandy Invasion where he received a commendation. One of his fondest recollections was his memory of nervously holding his division in a long salute as Eisenhower and Churchill circled the ship in a small vessel the day after D-Day.

After the war, James finished his law degree and joined the Covington & Burling law firm in Washington D.C. His specialty was tax law which he kept up on until his last days. He proceeded to take charge of corporate tax matters at the Norfolk & Western railway and to argue and win federal cases at the US Supreme Court. In the 1970s, James retired to Hilton Head Island, SC, and then to Savannah, GA. There he met and married Alice Wasden Jones. James and Alice enjoyed extensive travels, a love of art and literature, and a busy social calendar. Alice predeceased Jim, and was deeply missed over these last years. Jim had a lively, curious and open mind until the end. He swam laps every morning until recently, was an avid reader of history and Shakespeare, and a determined bridge player. He had weekly bridge games with his best buddies in Savannah and loved arguing politics and winning a few dollars off them. James (Jim, Dad, Granddaddy) had a quick smile and a twinkle in his eye. He had so many things he still wanted to do and see. He lamented as of late, Life is too short... He will be dearly missed by family and friends.

James is survived by his 3 children: Lynn Fairfax Carr, James E. Carr IV and Temple St. Clair Carr, and 3 grandchildren. He requested there to be no service or funeral. James requested instead that donations in his memory be sent to the churches of his devoted caregivers: First African Missionary Baptist Church 4526 South Okatie Hwy. Hardeeville, SC 29927; and Second Arnold Missionary Baptist Church 1427 East 37th St. Savannah, GA 31402.
