QUEENSTOWN Mary Virginia Barton Messick of Queenstown died at the Arcadia Assisted Living in Chester on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011. She was 92.

Born Feb. 12, 1919, in Queenstown, she was the daughter of the late Harry T. and Bessie Ewing Barton. She graduated from Centreville High School, Class of 1937. She worked for the Queenstown Post Office. On Oct. 11, 1939, she married John Glenn Messick of Greenwood, Del. After she had raised her family, Mrs. Messick worked at the Board of Elections Supervisors in Centreville.

Mrs. Messick loved her family, making cookies, tending her flower and vegetable gardens, and watching her birds. She was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Queenstown.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Messick is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" Miller and her husband, Benjamin L. of Bel Air; a son, William Lowe Messick of Havre de Grace; three sisters, Betty Quimby of Queenstown, Ann Yates of La Plata, and Patsy Bongiovanni of Miami, Fla.; grandchildren, Dawn Massarelli, Suzanne Ankerbrand, Suellen Brewer, Tina Duley, Michelle Willey and John Messick III; 12 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. She was pre-deceased by a son, John Glenn Messick Jr.

Graveside services were held at the Woodlawn Memorial Park in Easton on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011.
