Catherine “Marie” (Scott) Cole, 102, passed away at 11:00 am, November 2, 2012 at the Gallatin Rest Home in Bozeman, MT. She was born June 25, 1910 in Bozeman, MT, to Thomas William and Allie Ree (King) Scott. She attended grade school at the Elk Grove Elementary School near Bozeman Hot Springs, where they lived in the old hotel, where her father was the caretaker. They later moved to the Cloninger place where she attended Waterman School. She also attended the Hoffman School for a time when they lived up Trail Creek not too far from the old coke ovens on the John Anderson place. When they moved into Bozeman, she finished the 11th grade at Gallatin High School.
Marie, as she was known, and Harry Martin Stevens were married April 25, 1930 in Laurel, MT. The couple had three children: daughters Harriett Marie (Stevens) De Witte, Bette Jean “Jeannie” (Stevens) Pasha and son William Dennison “Denny” Stevens. Her husband preceded her in death September 17, 1965 at the Fort Harrison Veteran’s Hospital, Helena, MT.
After she married, she lived in Emigrant, MT, for about five years, and then spent a year in San Francisco, CA, while her husband Harry was in the Veteran’s Hospital in Oakland, CA. Upon returning to Montana, they lived in Bozeman until they bought their first home in Belgrade. After the death of her husband, she moved back to Bozeman where, she spent the rest of her life. Her last residence living on her own was the Darlington Manor in Bozeman. She became a resident at the Gallatin Rest Home March 15, 2005.
Marie is survived by a daughter, son and daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, two grandsons, one step-grandson, six granddaughters, six great-grandsons, 13 great-granddaughters, two step-great-grandsons, seven great, great-grandsons, sixteen great, great-granddaughter, two step-great, great grandsons, two step-great, great granddaughters [survivors names omitted].
Marie and Roy Ellis Cole were married September 21, 1970, in Idaho Falls, ID. He passed away December 25, 1988 at the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. Surviving is a step-daughter, four step-grandsons, three step-grand-daughters, eight step-great-grandsons, eight step-great-granddaughters, four step-great-great-grandsons and four step-great-great-granddaughters [survivors names omitted].
Marie was a very hard worker and worked for Dr. and Mrs. Roland G. Scherer and Dr. And Mrs. Bernard John Heetderks, Sr. doing housework for a number of years. She also worked for the Gallatin Laundry as a presser and as a clerk for J &E Market, Joe’s Finer Foods and Parkway Grocery. Marie was also a wonderful cook and cooked for the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, A O Pi Sorority and Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Her last job before retiring was cooking for Jim and Patty Goodrich at the 320 Guest Ranch in the Gallatin Canyon.
During the Second World War, she knitted sweaters for the Navy servicemen and for her family. Besides knitting sweaters, she made many beautiful quilts as well as crocheted Afghans, lap robes, doilies and doll clothes. She enjoyed people, had a terrific memory and she really like to travel. She was also a “whiz” at card games, scrabble and crossword puzzles. She especially loved to dance. Keeping busy at the Rest Home, she folded towels and bibs for the laundry. She was also crocheting Afghans for the new babies in the Nursery at the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, did two for her great-granddaughter and for many other for baby gifts.
Marie belonged to the Norma Rebecca Lodge # 9 in Bozeman after moving to Belgrade, transferred to the Sweet pea Rebecca Lodge #70; the American Legion Auxiliary # 14 (73 years of membership), Gallatin Historical Society/Pioneer Museum; and the Grand Avenue Christian Church. When she moved back to Bozeman she transferred her membership from the Belgrade Senior Center to the Bozeman Senior Center. She also did a lot of volunteer work for the RSVP program.
Marie was preceded in death by her father in 1948, her mother in 1960, infant brother James Elmo Scott in 1919, brother William Glenn Scott in 1932, brother George Albert Scott in 1990 , first husband Harry Martin Stevens in 1965, second husband Roy Ellis Cole in 1988, step-daughter Betty (Cole) Davis in 1972, step-son Daryl R. “Butch” Cole in 1994, great-grandson Brian Andrew in 1979, great-grandson Zachary Marquis Stevens in 1979, son-in-law Donald Pasha in 1994, son-in-law Albert F. DeWitte in 2005, grandson-in-law Allan Butler in 2007, sister Effie Rae (Scott) Freudenthaler in 2006, brother John Thomas “Tommy” Scott in 2009 and daughter Betty Jean “Jeannie” (Stevens) Pasha in 2012.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 am, Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Bozeman and interment following services will be at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT.
