Mary Spencer Dorland, died peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, at 91 years of age. She will be remembered as a woman of true grace, warmth and caring in all her affairs with both family and friends. Mary and her husband, Bill, shared over 66 years of marriage and raised four sons. Mary Elizabeth Spencer was born in Evelyn, Ky., on Nov. 13, 1923, to Henry Spencer and Beulah Vanderpool. She grew up in nearby Jackson, Ky., excelling in school while working the town's telephone switchboard at night. Her work not only helped with family expenses but also afforded her the opportunity to tour Washington, D.C., during her senior year, a rare opportunity for a student from Kentucky in those years. Following graduation as class valedictorian from Jackson High School, Mary enrolled at Lee's Junior College. Then an opportunity to work in her sister's restaurant enabled her to transfer to Fugazzi School of Business in Lexington, and it was while there that a friend talked her into attending a YWCA dance where she met her future husband, Bill Dorland. Bill was a soldier in Lexington taking advanced schooling in surveying. They would correspond for the duration of the war. In 1946, Mary and Bill married. After a short time in Denver, they transferred to Grand Junction with Public Service Company of Colorado, where they raised their four sons. After the boys were of sufficient age, Mary went back to work, first for the Girl Scouts of America in a clerical capacity and later at St. Mary's Hospital as a medical transcriptionist in the X-ray and radiation therapy departments. She was also an active member of Catholic Daughters of America. In 1974, Mary, Bill, and their youngest son, John, moved to Pueblo with Public Service Company. Mary continued her work with the church at Christ the King Parish and was also active in PEO, a women's educational and philanthropic organization. She and Bill enjoyed Pueblo's Knife and Fork Club and Town and Gown Performing Arts Series. Mary loved to read, play cards and spend time in her yard and garden. Both family and friends appreciated her Southern grace and charm. Mary is survived by her four sons, Steven (Sun Chia-Chu) of Folsom, Calif., Ralph (Anne Beavan) of Fort Collins, Alan (Adrienne) of Fort Worth, Texas, and John (Judy) of Pueblo; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, to whom she was truly devoted; a daughter, Anne Marie; and her parents, seven brothers and sisters, all of Kentucky and Indiana. A memorial Mass will be celebrated, 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Christ the King Parish, corner of Bonforte and Horseshoe in Belmont, followed by a reception. Condolences can be sent to the family at George McCarthy Funeral Home or at www.georgemccarthyfuneralhome. Arrangements, George McCarthy.
