James was involved in an accident in October 1879; his arm was mangled in a cotton gin. He was rushed to the home of his sister, Lou Bates (Margret "Lou" Louisa Baker) for treatment. They attempted to amputate his arm on the kitchen table and he either bleed to death or died from infection.
