Mary Eva Bailey was born and raised in Lewis County, West Virginia. She married Charles Bulkley Ames who was born in Groton, Massachusetts. Not long after their marriage, the couple moved to Jefferson County, Florida, where they established a lucrative mercantile business. They had 3 children in Florida: Charles B. (b.1865), Catherine B. (b.1867) and Eva Sibbell (b.1869). When Charles Ames Sr. died in 1869...just a couple of weeks after their third child was born, Mary Eva continued to run their business with the help of her brother, Henry Clay Bailey. Mary Eva's youngest daughter, Eva Sibbell died in 1877 and is buried next to her father in Monticello, Florida. Mary Eva and her 2 surviving children are found in the Florida Census in 1885. In 1896 at age 58, she appears in the Tacoma, Washington City Directory, and in 1900 is living with her brother-in-law, Amos Lawrence Ames, and his family in Sumner Washington. At age 75, Mary Eva died in Seattle, Washington, and was buried in the Amos Ames family lot in Sumner Cemetery.
