An article in the Hempstead Sentinel (Nov 1 1891) entitled "Unlucky Investments" clarifies relations between Lewis, first wife Elsie Smith, his granddaughter Ann Augusta Wright, his father-in-law Nathaniel Smith, and his second:
"Counselor Geo. A Mott, guardian of Anna Augusta Wright is about to institute proceedings for an accounting of the estate of Louis [Lewis] Pettit...Pettit died 15 years ago [1875]. His second wife, Jane Pettit, nee Sealey, and a grandchild, Anna Augusta Wright, survived him. The first wife of the deceased was Elsie Smith, a daughter of Nathaniel Smith who last spring died at Hempstead in his 102nd year..."
