When he was 4 years old, he and his mother left Canada and moved to the United States to live with relatives in Seattle, Washington. In 1952 he graduated from Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon and enlisted in the Army. After two years of military service, he returned to Seattle and was hired as a warehouseman for Frederick and Nelson Department store in Seattle, where he worked for the next 38 years. When Frederick's closed in 1992 he started his own yardcare business.
On May 20, 1961 he married Patricia Belle Fralick in Bellingham, Washington. During their marriage they lived in Seattle, Kent and Auburn and raised two sons and a daughter.
