Winslow Whitney (Whit) Smith, age 87, died Thursday, July 28, 1994 at his home in Logan.
He was born May 14, 1907 in Salt Lake City to Winslow Farr and Emily Whitney Smith. He married Alice Colton in the Salt Lake Temple on October 13, 1934. They were the parents of three children: Phillip Colton Smith (Ruth Ann) of Laie, Hawaii; Carolyn Colton Smith Moody (Richard), of Santa Clara, Utah; Annette Colton Smith (deceased).He is survived by his wife; and children; 14 grandchildren; sister, Virginia Hill (Granger), of San Francisco.
He was educated in Salt Lake City and in Chicago, receiving his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Utah and his Ph.D from the Univeristy of Wisconsin. He was a profeessor of bacteriology at the University of Southern California from 1940 to 1946 and headed the Department of Bacteriology and Public Health at Utah State University from 1946 to 1976. While on sabbatical from USU from 1953 to 1954, Whitney helped establish a bacteriology laboratory in Israel.
Whitney served on many Utah councils, in conferences and societies and was on the National Board of the Society of American Bacteriology. He was a Fellow of the American Public Health Association until the time of his death, and a member of Sigma Xi. He received the Thomas Beatty Award from the Utah Public Health Association in 1976 and in 1977 was elected an Honorary Life Member of the Utah Health Association of which he had served as President.
Whitney was active in the LDS Church all of his life, serving on the High Council in Los Angeles and in Logan, and as a teacher in many classes. From 1960 to 1963, he was the first President of the Austrian Mission.
Viewing will be held Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Allen Hall Mortuary and on Monday from 10:30 -11:30 a.m. at the Logan 20th Ward. Services will be held in the Logan 20th Ward on Monday, August 1, 12 noon. A short graveside service will be held a the Salt Lake City Cemetery (the John Henry Smith Family plot) on Monday at 4:15 p.m.
