He married Jane Williamson, 22 July 1866, White Co., Illinois. They were the parents of Mary Blackford. He remarried Mrs. Nancy Jane (Dotson) Hardy, 26 January 1868, Carmi, White Co., Illinois. He married Mrs. Dorinda C. Dowden, 25 June 1876. They were the parents of Mary Blackford. He married Mrs. Caroline A. McDowell, 20 October 1892.

Francis enlisted to serve the Union as a private on 2 August 1862, at Elm Grove, Illinois in Co. C, 87th Illinois Infantry. He was 29 years of age, 5 feet, 8 inches tall, with light hair and blue eyes, with light complexion. He filed for a pension for his service in Arkansas (411095) on 14 March 1883.

Francis is probably buried in Eight Mile Cemetery, Beedeville, Jackson Co., Arkansas where two of his daughters are buried. He was living in Cache Township in the 1900 Census, with his daughter and son-in-law, although his surname was misspelled. HOWEVER, there is a record that he died in Craighead County, Arkansas.
