Born in Undervelier, district of Delémont, Switzerland, to a family of farmers, Father Jean-Pierre Blanchard entered seminary in Porrentruy and was ordained priest by Bishop Joseph-Simon de Roggenbach of May 17, 1788. Appointed Curate of Soyhières in September that year, he retained this position until his death "in odour of sanctity" on November 22, 1824. Originally buried at the local cemetery, fifty years later his remains were transported to the crypt of his church, where they remain venerated to this day. His life was authored by Father Louis Vautrey.
