Herbert "Herb" Franklin, 80, of Muncie, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.

Born Feb. 15, 1923, in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of Sherman and Fern (Harbaugh) Franklin. He was married to the former Kathryn "Kate" Jordan for 57 years and she survives.

Other survivors include one son, John (wife, Deborah) Franklin; one stepdaughter, Gayle (husband, Max) Owens; one stepson Ron (wife, Andrea) Mitchell; one brother, Orville Franklin; one sister, Hildreth Spencer; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and special friend, Caryl Mitchell.

Mr. Franklin spent his early years in Detroit and lived in Shelbyville for several years prior to moving to Muncie in 1958.

He was employed with Marsh Supermarkets for more than 28 years prior to retiring as store manager of Broadway Marsh Supermarket in Muncie. Prior to that he was employed with Kroger in Shelbyville.

Mr. Franklin attended schools in Muncie.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Franklin was a member of College Avenue United Methodist Church in Muncie; life member of American Legion, Cammack Post; and charter member of War Memorial.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday and prior to the service Sunday at Meeks Mortuary, 415 E. Washington St. in Muncie.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with his grandson, Roger Owens, and Dr. Jim Farrar officiating.

Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville.
