(1921 – 2014)
Robert Warren Herbold passed away Dec. 23, 2014, at his home in Tempe, AZ. He was 93.
He was born Jan. 2, 1921, in Benchland, MT, to Russell Alfonso and Bonita Grace (Zeek) Herbold, both deaf. The family moved to Fort Des Moines, Iowa, when he was very young. Bob was the first of three children who were not deaf and when he started school, he had never spoken a word. The school sent him home with instructions to come back the following year. He was sent to live with his mother's (hearing) parents. That's when he started talking, "…and I haven't stopped yet!" he liked to tell people. He graduated from East High in Des Moines in 1940. He met Frances Nadine Sherrow through her sister, and they were married February 15, 1942, in Bethany, Missouri. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, achieving the Rank of Sergeant in the Military Police. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in several states throughout his career including Iowa, California, and finally in Arizona where he retired.
He thoroughly enjoyed being around people, had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh and tease. His hobby was raising Koi fish (he referred to as "the kids") which he entered in competitions. He carried a metal Playboy Club card in his wallet setting off airport security alarms more than once. He also enjoyed watching sports, including the Harlem Globetrotters.
Bob was advised by a doctor years ago to drink Scotch every day. Some years later, he was advised by a second doctor to stop drinking Scotch. He chose to continue to follow the first doctor's advice, and if asked, I'm sure he would have told us the secret to his excellent eyesight and longevity was Scotch.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Frances in 1998; daughter Ruby in 2002; and brother Donald in 2008. He is survived by his daughter Lynne Stevens of Phoenix; a sister Margaret Bowman of Everett, WA; sister-in-law Janice Herbold of Tempe; several nieces and nephews; and his dear friend and companion, Louise.
There will be no services at his request.
